Information about Hueco Tanks

Tours + General Information

At Wagon Wheel our goal is to connect you with professional, passionate, Hueco Tanks certified guides. Wagonwheelco-opt.com is here to help you find full and half-day climbing, running, hiking, and rock art tours in Hueco Tanks guided access only areas of East Mountain, West Mountain, and The East Spur.

Group and Private Tour Fees:

·       A spot on an open tour is $30 per person, $7 for park fees, $21 for your guide, $2 to WW (guide tips are accepted and appreciated).

·       The first person to request an open tour is the “primary” member of the tour. The primary gets to pick the main destination. All other participants also voice where they would like to go within reasonable proximity of the primary's destination.

·       Private tours can be requested. Fees for private tours are $7 to the park per person, the guide fee is negotiable with the guide, $2 to WW per person.

Communicating and Day of Your Tour:

·       When you request a tour, depending upon guide availability, a Wagon Wheel guide will contact you to arrange further details.

·       We do our best to accommodate all requests. Tours are subject to guide availability. If you do not hear from your guide within 24 hours of your tour, you can assume the requested tour will not go out.

·       Once you have connected with a guide, the guide will set up a designated meeting spot outside of the park where you can consolidate cars and fill out the required paperwork to enter Hueco Tanks.

·       In addition to your climbing gear, make sure you bring ample food, water, sunscreen, and clothing for a day in Hueco—weather can change fast and a warm day can become a chilly one with the wind.

·       Your guide is in charge—please listen to their instructions and follow the rules and regulations of Hueco Tanks State Park that your guide will instruct and navigate you through.

·       Have fun and be safe!

All climbing is subject to cancellation subject to Hueco Tanks weather closure policy. Read about the policy here.

Cancellation policy:

·       You can cancel a tour up to seven days before a tour goes out by clicking on "Details" which is located next to your tour information on the tour page.

·       Here you can click "Request Cancellation" to send us information about removing you or a spot you have reserved on the tour.

·       We cannot cancel the tour outright in case someone else has signed up for the tour.

Payments:

·       Payments are due the day of your tour. Seven days prior to your tour your guide can request 50% of your tour cost.
North Mountain and Volunteer tours:

Self-guided area the following information is from TPWD website:

Due to the fragile nature of the park’s resources, only 70 people can enter the self-guided area at one time. We reach that limit regularly from November through March and on weekends and holidays. Once that happens, no one can enter the area until other visitors leave.

Know before you go:

-To avoid a wait, call (512) 389-8911 to reserve a day for your visit. Permits cannot be reserved online.

-Bring your own equipment: climbing shoes, crash pads, chalk, food and water.

-Dress for the desert: sunblock, hat, hiking boots and the right clothes for the weather.

-Check our Closure List to know which areas are off limits.

-Read through our weather closure policy for technical climbing and bouldering.

Booking policies:

-Each person seeking a permit must have a Reserve America account. Create accounts online or by calling (512) 389-8911. You can only create accounts for people in your household. Those not in your household will need to create their own accounts.

-You can reserve permits for up to four people (including yourself). You will need a phone number or email address associated with each person's account to reserve a permit for them.

-We recommend creating accounts ahead of time to avoid long phone calls during the busy season.

-You may only cancel permits reserved under your account.

Pet policies:

-The Texas Administrative Code currently reads in Title 31, Part 2, Chapter 59, Subchapter F, Rule 59.134, section C (Animals), subsection 2B: Pets. It is an offense for any person to: bring into or possess within a state park an unattended pet.

-If the pet is in the campground because that is essentially an established temporary "residence". With water and electricity down in the campsites, that's an opportunity for climate control, as animal neglect or abuse is another set of laws to consider. Therefore; pets in a campsite, as long as they are safe, secure and not disrupting others, are permitted to be there. A campsite may or may not be available at the last minute and planning ahead is best.

-The other option is to make arrangements for pets to be outside of the park, safe and secure.
